JOHN HOLLOWELL WANTS HIS brother-in-law to bring bis 1959 Cadillac Eldorado to the next car show where Hollowell displays his '57 BMW Isetta microcar. "I'll put a big sign up behind the Cadillac that says, 'We won the war,' and another behind the Isetta: 'We lost.'" Microcars boomed in Europe during the postwar reconstruction years in the 1950s and may have even saved BMW from failure as it licensed the Italian Iso design for the Isetta in 1955 to keep its factory busy. After seven years, BMW produced more than 160,000 Isettas (about 8,000 were shipped to the United States). They were cheap, didn't use a lot of material and could be powered by motorcycle engines, and at a time when Europeans needed cars, micros did the job.
