Racers, wearied by the tortuous undulations, uneven pavement and unpredictable climate along the 13-mile, 73-turn Nordschleife ("North Loop") at Germany's Nurburgring race circuit, refer to it as "Green Hell." But for automotive engineers trying to develop road cars that can respond safely and predictably in a diverse range of road and weather conditions, the Nordschleife also can evoke a chorus of "My Blue Heaven." Andreas Wohler, head of chassis development for Audi, appreciates having such a real-world test track only about a five-hour autobahn drive from the company's headquarters in Ingolstadt.
