Placer deposits are the focus of many small-scale prospectors, as they can be worked with comparatively inexpensive equipment. In this conclusion of a six-part series, we will take a look at the geology and formation of placer deposits, and how knowledge of placer deposits can improve the individual prospector's take. Placer deposits are accumulations of valuable minerals concentrated in loose materials, such as stream sediments, or in beach materials that are created by natural processes. In brief, the origin and formation of placers are all about the forces of weathering and erosion. The process of erosion is the breakdown and removal of the minerals that form the earth's crust, also commonly known as weathering. The process is divided into two basic types-chemical and mechanical weathering.
