During the summer of 2001, Hunter Exploration Group conducted a regional mineral exploration program on the Melville Peninsula in Nunavut, in search of predominantly gold, platinum and copper. While they were there, they decided to take some "till" samples, to specifically test the diamond potential of the region. Months later, the results of the metallic samples came back with nothing of value or interest while the "till" samples had not yet been processed. Disappointed and almost completely out of money, Hunter decided to use the last of its funds to process its collection of "till" samples in one last attempt to find anything of value.
