In a recent issue of the AOR Gordon Giles made some interesting observations about the tying staking and judging of cym-bidiums. Like Gordon, I remember when the rale restricting tying cymbidium spikes only to the bottom flower was introduced and thegrumblings and outcries that accompanied it. It was not surprising that the rale did not last long. As the rales Gordon was talking about were and are A.O.C. rales, his suggestion that the cymbidium clubs change the current rale allowing the tying of spikes to the top flower and go back to the old ties only to the bottom flower had seems misdirected. The Australian Cymbidium Society and state cymbidium clubs have no control over or input into anything the A.O.C. does. Three of the four state based cymbidium clubs and the A.C.S. have no connection with the A.O.C. in terms of judging and have developed thek own judging guidelines and judging panels. Only Gordon's home state club, the C.C.A. (NSW) relies on A.O.C. judges and rales as they have yet to fully develop their own judging rales and establish their own judging panel.

7. The role of ethics and ideology in our contribution to global health The topic of this article has vividly interested the author for many years. It is fascinating to him that the issues at stake have not changed for the last 30 years or so.
