The pool of skilled labour in the mining industry is critically short and mine operators are pessimistic about any sight of relief in the next three years. A report delivered in March 2006 prepared by the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining and The University of Queensland Social Research Centre for Macquarie Securities and Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AUSIMM) revealed that skill shortages were overwhelmingly the key issue in the industry.
