As far as human memory extends, locust plagues have ravaged Africa and the Near East. The descent of dark clouds of locusts on crops sweetening in the field poses a question to many Westerners in general and, more particularly, to international development organizations (virtually all of which bring Western food prejudices to their handling of Southern food crises): How will the poor in affected areas manage to live after their crops have been destroyed?
