When the United States defeated the screw worm in 1966, science helped lead the eradication charge against the flesh-eating pest. But the battle zone moved southward into Mexico, and screwworm assaults on the United States continued at the border. Then in 1991, science aided Mexico in eradicating the lives lock pest Now, with the battle lines drawn in Central America, scientists depend upon an ever-expanding arsenal of weapons to defend the United States and Mexico against threatening screwworm outbreaks.
