Com termers in South Cotabato, despite having one of the best yields in Asia, shifted to other crops for cash last year in the face of slumping prices. Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS) regional officer Henry Soriano said farmers in the provincefound bettor sources of income in asparagus, pineapple, and com silage as livestock feed. Last year's BAS figures showed comlands in South Cotabato shrinking by mote than 24 per cent from 277, 100 to about 210,000 hectares as com prices dropped to between P4.20 and P4.80 a kilo. "Barely enough to keep body and soul together," statistician William Baranan said.
