EDITORS NOTE: This feature has been specially adapted for PIGINTERNATIONAL from a report by David Steane, chief technical adviser on the conservation of animal genetic resources in Asia and the Pacific region for the Food and Agriculture Organization(FAO) food/agriculture organization of the United Nations, based in Bangkok, Thailand. The FAO currently is running a four year project in 12 Asian countries, including China, on the used and long-term maintenance of domestic animal diversity. Up to date population and performance data on pig breeds in these countries is being developed, with proposals on how they might be conserved.
