Improved cultivars of deep water rice can produce comparable yiekls with the best high-yielding irrigated rice cultivars currently grown, scientists here say. "Improved deepwater rice flooded with 80 centimeters of water can thrive and produce yieldscomparable with the current best high-yielding irrigated cultivars, such as IR 72 grown in only 10 cm of water," said AM. Mazaredo, assistant scientist at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). "These matching yields of up to six tons per hectare occur with a nitrogen fertilizer supply of 80 kilograms per hectare during the wet season."
