摘要

One of the main lessons is that no agriculture industry can afford to become complacent about disease control. Biosecurity must be maintained at the highest possible level. Although interest in the foot-and-mouth (FMD) disease outbreak in Britain and other areas of the world has waned recently, there are lessons to be learned that could help United States veterinarians, livestock producers and regulatory officials in the future. Two Europeans who have been directly involved in helping to combat this year's outbreaks in Europe provided their perspectives on some of these lessons at an international Summit on FMD in Chicago earlier this summer. The summit was presented in part by Vance Publishing Corp. Food Systems Group. Keith Baker, a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, is an advisor on FMD to the United Kingdom Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF). Simon Barteling is a consultant and expert on FMD and has been an advisor on animal disease to the Dutch and South African governments.
