摘要

In Asia, the Philippines ranks 20th in terms of egg consumption. The low egg intake is mainly due to its being misunderstood. The egg industry has been for sometime an underrated, "overlooked"/taken for granted segment of the poultry sector. Since the advent of trade liberalization, government's attention was preoccupied with the broiler sector and at one time or another, with hog farmers' concerns. Egg farmers have their own problems too. For a long time, the price of egg has not really moved awayfrom the P2.00 mark Prices of other food items have gone up geometrically, but not eggs. Input costs as well, have compounded, but not eggs. After posting an unusually good performance in late '98 to mid '99 due to an extreme shortage that time, egg producers started to become wary in the second quarter of 2000 as prices showed signs of weakening again. The egg seemed to be going back to its P2.00 range. This cycle has been on going ever since. In October of that year till early 2001, a fledgling groupof egg producers who have earlier banded as a federation, gathered together to seek mandate from some 150 other egg producers nationwide to launch an egg campaign. The group made several representations with the Department of Agriculture. Even the thenDA Secretary Angara expressed surprise about the problems that was besetting the industry then. Faced with competition from imported egg products, against an obviously stagnant demand for fresh eggs, layer farmers have been in very rough sailing for years. Just before 2001, egg produce has been fetching very low farmgate prices. Consequently depressed and with cost of inputs going up, perpetrated by the peso depreciation, egg farmers felt they really could not weather in-coming problem as a result of GATT/AFTA.
