摘要

In the USA and in Denmark, many veterinary practitioners say they have not seen a case of swine dysentery in years. But recent meetings of pig clinicians in both countries have registered the emergence of several "new" enteric problems. In fact these involve infections that can hardly be called new because most have been around for decades. Although their higher profile today could just be the result of using the latest diagnostic techniques to pick out the exact cause of a pig's diarrhoea, the greater livelihood is that some previously minor enteric diseases really are becoming more of a danger to good pig production. To understand why they have now emerged as troublesome where once they were considered to be of little importance, look at first at various management patterns which have been adopted widely around the world in the past few years. Units have increased in size, for example, so that a herd of over 500 sows is no longer exceptional. There is also a widespread use of high specificationcommercial hybrids with excellent performance characteristics and low disease status, derived from a single source.
