摘要

Evolution of the rp1 rust resistance complex of genes (which confer resistance to Puccinia sorghi) in maize and the genetic structure of the complex are reviewed. The central role of recombination in creating genetic diversity at the locus is discussed, with emphasis on mispairing of genes during meiosis, generation of rp1 genes with novel specificities and the creation of genes which lesion mimic phenotypes. Haplotyes with non-race-specific characteristics, created by genetic recombination, are considered as a means of developing maize cultivars with durable rust resistance.
