In the manufacture of long products, especially sections, there is a worldwide progress in technologies and plants for direct casting of initial profiles (eg, beam blanks) for relevant end use. Also here one differentiates between conventional bloom or beam blank plants with web thicknesses from 100 to 180 mm and CBP (Compact Beam Production) plants with wed thicknesses from 50 to 90mm. The illustration shows the range of beam blank formats that can today be produced via continuous casting route.On account of the exacting requirements, SMS have recently undertaken extensive investigations, developments and operational tests with the aim of further developing the machine head, strand guidance and secondary cooling areas in their continuous casting plants in order to meet all the demands placed on them. The following equipment have been optimized and/or newly developed in order to fulfill all functions of the machine head:* Narrow side adjustment* Liquid steel level control* Early warning of breakout* Thermal mapping facilities* Electromagnetic braking and stirring equipment* New submerged nozzle geometries
