This study was conducted to determine a suitable soil and moisture conservation technique for forestry plantation under dryland hill slopes in Kandhamala, Orissa, India during 2003-2005, using mango and teak as experimental species. The treatments comprise: (T1) pit filled up to the top; (T2) pit filled up to 6 inches from top; (T3) pit filled up to 9 inches from top; (T4) crescent pit; (T5) ring pit; (T6) prevailing D/S crescent ridge and planting tree at U/S; and (T7) inward sloping contour terrace. Results showed that the rate of growth of teak and mango under T5 was significantly higher compared with all the other treatments. Maximum moisture content was also observed in T5. It is concluded that ring pit should be recommended to get higher plant growth particularly in the north eastern Ghats of Orissa.
