摘要

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) is the principal non legume fodder crop grown all over the India under poor management. As forage, it is fast growing, palatable, nutritious and utilized as silage and hay besides fresh feeding. Agronomic techniques are veryhelpful to obtain its higher productivity of good quality herbage to fulfill feeding requirement of dairy animals. Being an exhaustive crop, sorghum suffers heavily if proper amount of fertilizer is not applied. All the crops in general and fodders in particular, use nitrogen in large quantity as nitrogen is one of the most important factors, which influences the yield and quality of fodders. Scheduling of irrigation is very important agronomic practice particularly in case of fodders like sorghum as uptake of water is involved in solubilization and transportation of nutrient elements from soil to the plant system. For better efficiency of live stock, only quantitative production is not important, but the quality also plays its role. Therefore, harvesting stage of crop is also very important for good quality fodder as the succulency dry matter and HCN content of fodder are largely affected by harvesting stage of the crop.
