A method for the determination of chemical oxygen demand in wastewater eliminating the use of toxic mercuric sulphate to overcome the interference of chloride is proposed with the in situ formation of antimony (V) sulphate.This method overcomes the chloride interference upto 2800 mg 1~(-1) with an error of ± 5.0% when potassium hydrogen phthalate was used as standard (COD,1000 mg 1~(-1)).This modification was adopted for the determination of COD in real wastewater samples and the results compare well with the standard method using mercuric sulphate as a chloride masking agent.
