Haustorium, the tissue mass formed inside coconut shell during germination is used for increasing the general health and vitality especially during pregnancy. Based on its nutritional richness with all essential micro and macro elements for the growth, there is enormous scope for developing a health drink from it by revealing its role in growth energetics. Unlike tender coconut water and endosperm cream, physiological vitality of haustorium is high since it promotes growth of the seedling. Realizingits potential as a nutritive mass for consumption, SCMS Institute of Bio Sciences and Biotechnology Research and Development, Kochi, Kerala in association with Coconut Development Board is undertaking a study to popularize this fat free nutrient rich tissue as health supplement.
