FIELD EVALUATION OF EMAMECTIN BENZOATE AGAINST BOLLWORMS OF COTTONAND ITS SAFETY TO NATURAL ENEMIES

摘要

Cotton is an important fibre crop and this earns foreign exchange of more than 10 billion dollars annually (Rao et al, 2007). India ranks first position in cotton production but the productivity is well below the world average. The damage caused by anarray of insect pests to the plant is one of the major biotic production constraints. About 166 species of insect pests have been reported from sowing to maturity out of which 10 are the key pests which cause major damage. Among them bollworm complex comprising of spotted bollworm,Earias vittella (F.), American bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hubn.) and pink boll worm, Pectinophora gossypiella (Saund.) are of prime significance causing 30-80 per cent loss in seed cotton yield (Patil, 1998). Recently, the incidence of tobacco caterpillar, Spodoptera litura (F.) on cotton infesting the leaves and fruiting bodies at early stages of crop growth has been reported from most of the cotton growing belt of India, although cotton is not the most preferred host (Singh and Byas, 1975 and Sainy et al, 2005).
