Experiments were conducted to understand the demography of the beet army worm, Spodoptera exigua, on the host plants Amaranthus viridis and Cicer arietinum through laboratory life tables, keeping only the food quality as the limiting factor. S. exigua completed its life cycle on A. viridis in 31 days. The ova, larvae, pupae and adults constituted 47.64, 50.98, 1.17 and 0.21% of the population of the pest, respectively. The mean generation time was 18.49 days on this host, whereas the intrinsic rate of increase (rm), doubling time (DT) and annual rate of increase (ARI) were 0.2705 (females/female/day), 2.56 days and 7.57x1042, respectively. When reared on C. arietinum, the population of S. exigua consisted of 31.95, 53.83, 10.40 and 3.81% ova, larvae, pupae and adults, respectively. The pest took 4.67 days to double its population and the ARI was 3.22x1023 on this host. A. viridis was identified as a better host of S. exigua nutritionally compared to C. arietinum.
