The relative quantal sunshine protection extended to the Hear NPV (PAU-1 Strain), sprayed at 109 occlusion bodies (OBs)/ml, on tomato cv. Punjab Chhuhara foliage by 2 selected optical brighteners as ultraviolet (UV) protectants (Ranipal and Ujala, each at 1.0%), was assessed against Helicoverpa armigera larvae (1.35+or-0.13 cm) in laboratory bioassays through calculated lethal time (LT50) and original activity remaining (OARs) values following standard techniques. The LT50 of the sunshine exposed yet unprotected virus alone varied between 100.8 and 392 h for the various exposures tested. In contrast, the reduced LT50s of 80.0-286.4 and 92.8-368.8 h at 0-168 h sunshine exposures tested registered for mixing with the virus, Ranipal and Ujala protectants, respectively, indicated the sunshine protective fastness of the former over the latter protectant, for this virus on the tomato foliage. Based on the OARs, the virus in the presence of Ranipal and Ujala persisted with increased levels of 26.67 and 16.67% OAR intact values, respectively, in contrast to 10% OAR intact value observed for the exposed unprotected virus during the same exposure period (168 h). This represented 166.70 and 66.70% increase in field persistence efficacy of this virus against sunshine radiations, respectively, through the use of the Ranipal and Ujala sunshine protectants.
