Attract-annihilation and mass trapping method for management of fruit fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae Coq. in bitter gourd.

Field studies were conducted in Uttar Pradesh, India, in 2003 and 2004, to find out the most suitable on-farm management tactic for fruit fly (Bactrocera cucurbitae) infesting bitter gourd with the bait application technique (BAT), male annihilation technique (MAT), BAT + MAT conjugated and cover spray (0.1% malathion). All the treatments effectively reduced the fruit damage during both the years. Among the treatments, BAT + MAT proved the most effective tactic for fruit fly management with significantly less fruit damage (17.97 and 16.44%) compared to the control (49.87 and 53.07%) during 2003 and 2004, respectively. In the remaining treatments, the damage level varied from 19.98 to 26.05%.
