NEW research aims to increase sugarcane yields through improved water use efficiency and photosynthetic response.CSIRO has teamed up with Sugar Research Australia and the Commonwealth Department of Agriculture to help growers respond to the challenges of producing high cane yield in variable climates, as well as rising irrigation costs. Sugarcane is by far the mosteconomically important crop in Northern Australia, with the raw sugar produced each year worth over $1.5 billion.As with most other crops, rainfed sugarcane usually experiences dry periods and water stress each year, and occasionally severely during spring and early summer. In irrigated regions, there is also strong concern among sugarcane growers about rising costs of irrigation.
