摘要

Sheep are usually maintained under extensive system of management with grazing being the only source of nutrition. Natural grazing lands are lush during rainy season (August to January) and after that they remain dry during rest of the months. Duringsummer (lean period) there is acute shortage of forage in the grazing lands and farmers graze their animals in harvested crop fields. Madras Red sheep has adapted over the years to hot and humid climatic conditions prevailing in its habitat (Balasubramanyam et al.; 2012). Supplementary feeding during lean period prevents loss of production and reproduction in sheep flocks (Shinde et al., 1995; Chaturvedi et al., 2000, 2003; Santra et al., 2002). Therefore, the present study was undertaken to assess theeffect of concentrate feeding on growth of Madras Red lambs in field flocks during summer season.
