About 30 percent of the total area under wheat is rainfed and largely confined to the northern hills zone, north.western plains zone and the north-eastern plains zone. There is a need to improve the productivity of rainfed wheat. Poor moisture availability, inadequate and imbalanced use of fertilizers, lack of awareness of improved varieties and inadequate plant protection and weed control measures are some of the bottlenecks in improving productivity of rainfed wheat. Improved practices of moisture conservation, control of soil erosion, sowing of short-duration cereal and legume crops during rainy (kharif) season, harvesting of kharif crops at physiological maturity, use of improved wheat varieties, seed treatment to control termites and loose smut, timely sowing, proper placement and balanced use of NPK fertilizers, use of 2,4-D for control of broadleaf weeds and plant protection measures to ward-off field rats, birds, aphids, brown mite from the crop, would go a long way in improving the productivity of rainfed wheat.
