摘要

Kargil district of the Ladakh province of Jammu & Kashmir state of India faces long winter and for around 5 months is covered with thick snow. The climatic conditions are very harsh and characterized by very low temperature varying from -38° to +35°C with an annual precipitation 200 mm in terms of snow. Animal husbandry plays an important role in the livelihood and food security of the people of this region as the animal population is thrice the human population. Among the livestock, sheep population is highest and they are mostly used for mutton and carpet wool production. The local sheep are short in height with brown, black in colour having brown and black spots on the face, abdomen or lower legs. The present study was undertaken to record body measurements and conduct economic analysis of local sheep reared by 142 farmers of Kargil under field conditions during the year 2007- 08.
