摘要

Animal husbandry in north-eastern hills (NEH) region of the country is an integral and inseparable part of agriculture as most of the people due to multifarious reasons depend on livestock for their economic support. Proportion of total population in NEH ranges from 85 percent in Meghalaya to 96 percent in Arunachal Pradesh, while the all-India average is 80 percent. Against this rural population who are, by and large, agriculturist by occupation, the area available for cultivation is small and hasbeen estimated to be around 2 270 million ha. Of this, over 70 percent is located in Assam, 8.0 percent in Manipur and 7.5 percent in Tipura. The area available for other 5 states including Sikkim is therefore, very meagre for which the farmers find livestock husbandry to be a better alternative. Moreover, the tribal people of the region are exclusively non-vegetarian in their dietary habit for which meat products are very much in demand. Tribal people constitute 79 percent of total population in Arunachal Pradesh, 88.6 percent in Nagaland, 80 percent in Meghalaya and so on. Importance of meat producing livestock, especially pig, in the region cannot, therefore, be over emphasized.
