摘要

Mehsana goat is an important dual purpose breed of India. Its name is derived from district Mehsana of North Gujarat. The geographical nature of the area, semi-arid climatic conditions, erratic and uncertain rainfall and frequent drought in the regiontransformed the goat genetic resources to sustain under extensive low input production system. Mehsana goat is a source of livelihood and plays an important role in the rural economy of the region by providing employment and regular income to a large section of landless, small and marglnal farmers through milk, meat and manure. There is meager information available on growth and reproductive potential of Mehsana goats (Acharya, 1982). Under the ICAR - NBAGR Network Project on Animal Genetic Resources:Survey, Evaluation and Characterization of Mehsana Goat, an attempt was madd to study its production performance under traditional low input production system in Banaskantha, Mehsana and Patan districts of North Gujarat
