Antifungal Activity of Pseudomonas fluorescens Against Plant Pathogenic Fungi of Tobacco

Pseudomonads are gram-negative, strictly aerobic, polarly flagellated rods and aggressive colonizers of the rhizosphere of various crop plants, and have a broad spectrum antagonistic activity against plant pathogens, by way of antibiosis, or the production of inhibitory compounds (CartwrightefaZ., 1955,Rasalese?a/., 1995 and Vidhyasekaran and Muthamilan, 1999); siderophore production (Winkelmann and Drechsel, 1997) and nutrition or site competition (Bull etal., 1991). Some species of Pseudomonas canalso produce levels of HCN that are toxic to certain pathogenic fungi (Dowling and O'Gara, 1994). These characteristics made Pseudomonas species as promising biocontrol agents that can be used as seed inoculant and root dips against soil-borne plant pathogens.
