Impact of watershed development and land use dynamics on agricultral productivity and socio-economic status of farmers in central Himalayas

Integrated watershed development approach in the fragile Himalayan zone is a proven strategy to conserve natural resources and to improve crop productivity of rainfed agriculture and socio-economic status of rural communities. Evaluation of two watersheds, Khootgad and Mohnagad in Uttaranchal revealed that after implementation of watershed management (WSM) project, significant changes in land use had taken place. Cash crops replaced coarse millets, while increased irrigation facilities and improved crop demonstrations encouraged the farmers to adopt new crop production technologies which significantly increased the yield of crops by 21% in potato at Mohnagad to 126% in wheat at Khootgad. Total foodgrain production increased by 135% in Mohnagad and 41.4% in Khootagad. Fodder production also increased signficantly by utilization of uncultivated rainfed and community lands. Milk yield increased by 116% and 132% in Khootgad and Mohnagad watershed, respectively and thereby a perceptible improvement wasobserved in the quality of life. Therefore, integrated watershed programme can lead to greater environmental security, sustainable agriculture production and to reduce income disparities in the Himalayan region.
