This study was conducted at the Indian Lac Research Institute Farm in Namkum, Ranchi, Jharkhand, India, from May 2005 to July 2006 to determine the influence of soil moisture conservation practices on soil water content and growth of ber (Ziziphus mauritiana) and kusum (Schleichera oleosa). Three-month-old nursery-raised ber and kusum seedlings were transplanted in the field during July 2005, when plenty of soil moisture was available. Treatments comprised: (T1) half moon terracing; (T2) mulching with locally available grasses in and nearby the experimental plots; (T3) compartmental bunding; (T4) use of black gram (Vigna mungo) as cover crop; and (T5) control. Significant improvements in soil water content was observed only during October 2005 and April-May 2006. The highest soil moisture content (10.0-26.6 cm/m) was observed in T1 in all the months, except in December 2005. Plant height, basal girth and canopy spread were significantly influenced by the soil moisture conservation practices. The highest values for ber plant height (118.65 cm), basal girth (6.33 cm) and canopy spread (94.42 cm) were recorded in T1, while for kusum the highest values (35.50, 3.10 and 41.38 cm, respectively) were recorded in T2. The average grain yield, stalk and biomass of black gram was 169.44, 65.90 and 228.25 kg/ha, respectively.
