There has been much interest among vineyard managers in using mulch as a management tool of the vineyard floor. Despite claims of benefits, including yield increases, savings in chemicals, water and even quality, locally there has been little scientific research and results of many field trials so far have been inconclusive. Most of the previous trials have been of short duration (one season) and not enough measurements have been made to quantify the changes and benefits of using these materials in the vineyard.
