Performance of guinea fowl in Tarai and Bhabar area of Uttarakhand

A field experiment was conducted at four different locations viz. Pantnagar, Sitarganj, Ramnagar and Gadarpur area of Uttarakhand to evaluate the adaptability and growth performance of guinea fowl. The body weights at 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24 weeks ofage were recorded as 187.83 +- 0.38, 455.21 +- 3.08, 924.92 +- 6.72, 1202.34 +- 7.49, 1343.00 +- 7.08 and 1550.32 +- 6.48 g at Pantnagar; r83.73 +- 2.59, 438.89 +- 3.82, 841.47 +- 5.45, 1120.96 +- 7.55, 1303.49 +- 6.66, and 1396.26 +- 6.81 g at Sitarganj; 164.00 +- 1.51, 425.09 +- 2.07, 779.87 +- 2.44, 1016.74 +- 3.41,1188.29 +- 10.17and 1317.17 +- 8.96 g at Ramnagar; and 147.02 +- 1.39,423.76 +- 5.85,856.82 +- 6.85,1110.29 +- 9.01,1278.79 +- 8.79 and 1402.61 +- 8.57 g at Gadarpur area locations, respectively. Pantnagar flock was the best and had higher body weight than flocks of Sitarganj, Gadarpur and Ramnagar locations. The mortality rate of corresponding locations were recorded as 11.25, 14.44, 18.33 and 19.05% during 0-8 weeks of age; 3.62, 5.19,4.08 and 3.53% after brooding /during 8-12 weeks of age. Over all mortality rates at Pantnagar, Sitarganj, Ramnagar and Gadarpur area were 14.50, 18.89, 21.66 and 21.90% respectively. Out of total mortality more than 21 3 birds were died during broodingstage. The mortality after 12 week of age were negligible in Guinea fowl showing there by that the vulnerability of keets to stress/ other factors than that of adults.
