摘要

In practical silkworm breeding, the ultimate aim is to achieve economic gains by improving the economic trails of silkworm breeds. For any breeding programme, the choice of parents to be utilized as breeding resource material and the strategies to beused for identifying them are of great significance. It is well established that the degree of importance of the contributory traits of economic value are not similar in silkworm. It is also known that, the knowledge on the heritability status of characters under consideration is of utmost importance in any breeding programme. Similarly, it is also of paramount importance the correlation between the different characters and their response to selection and the influence of environment on the genotypes under selection. Considering all these facts, the main concern of breeders is the use of appropriate selection strategies for the genetic as well ail economic improvement of silkworm breeds. In this review, the available information on various selection strategies is compiled for the benefit of silkworm breeders engaged in conventional breeding of the silkworm, Bombyx mori L.
