Attempts have been made to eliminate surface sink defect in sink forming alloy castings by providing an allowance instead of use of riser, A sample mathematical model was developed to predict the shape of surface depression on a cylindrical casting with different height-to-diameter ratios. Subsequently, the geometry of projected allowance over the castings required to form a flat horizontal surface on solidification was derived in terms of height and diameter of the castings and % shrinkage of the alloy. Finally, the effectiveness of the sink allowance was verified by experiments with pure aluminium castings. This allowance was not effective due to an effect called as. "Arch Effect", An alternative method of sink allowance is proposed where minor machining would be required at the edges of castings.
