Sand is a major ingredient used in steel foundry. The quality of sand used in a steel foundry determines the quality of the steel casting to be produced. Sand is used in a steel foundry to prepare moulds. Sand quality affects the quality of castings in many ways. Sand erosion from mould necessitates reworking of casting for repair. Besides, this liquid metal penetrates into the mould wall through the pours in sand moulds resulting in poor surface finish of the castings. Sand wash makes the steel dirty and sometimes metallurgically unacceptable.
