This is the car that lit a fire under Chrysler during one of its periodic flirtations with mediocrity. Its arrival was as startling as a low-flying Vulcan, proved that there was creativity inside Chrysler after all and had the effect of distracting journalists, not to mention customers, from grumbling about the corporation's spectacularly dull late-1980s line-up. In an era of LeBarons, Dynastys and New Yorkers with vinyl roofs and waterfall grilles, the Dodge Viper's debut was as shocking as discovering its fanged namesake slaloming across your duvet. It took the 1989 Detroit motor show by storm, leaving the company little choice but to put its eye-blinding concept into production.
