Kia's first plug-in hybrid powertrain is introduced on its bargain-priced family saloon Plug-in hybrids aren't for everyone yet, but you can't argue with the official numbers, even if they sometimes stretch credibility. Kia's first plug-in hybrid, the Optima PHEV, combines a 2.0-litre petrol engine and an electric motor to produce combined economy of 176.6mpg and a CO_2 output of just 37g/km. And at ￡31,495 (after the ￡2500 plug-in car grant), it undercuts both the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and Volkswagen Passat GTE on price, the latter by nearly ￡5000.
