No fewer than 14 major car makers are in discussions with an American company about a revolutionary new internal combustion engine. That company is the Scuderi Group and, following a first experimental trial last June, its engine is now running from idle to 4000rpm and achieving excellent combustion that is claimed to be better than a traditional Otto cycle engine's. By the end of this year, Scuderi expects to have signed its first license deal. "The first production engine is three to five years later," says PR boss Bill Wrinn. Split-cycle engine theory dates from 1914, but Scuderi says it has found technology breakthroughs to combat the inherent twin drawbacks of poor breathing and low heat efficiency.
