Understated looks make this 256bhp, 150mph saloon a secondhand sleeper hit. Think of a four-wheel-drive Japanese performance saloon and chances are you'll picture a Mitsubishi Evo or Subaru Impreza WRX. Compared with these raw and raucous machines, the Mazda 6 MPS looks unassuming - almost innocuous -but in performance terms it packs a fair punch. What's more, you can pick up a really sound one for ￡5000. When the MPS arrived here in January 2006, subtlety made the new Mazda something rather different. "It's hard to distinguish from a normal 6," says Mark Fryer, owner of independent marque specialist Freelance Mazda (freelancemazda.co.uk). The MPS body kit adds just a little muscle: the slight bonnet bulge barely suggests extra power, and the 18-inch alloys give an air of quiet purpose rather than menace. Even with its deeper front air dam and twin exhausts there's nothing to persuade you that the MPS is more than a mildly warmed rep-mobile.
