Prices of classics are rising, but you can get in on the ground floor for ￡1k Classic cars are apparently worth their weight in gold, at least according to investment experts. Yes, metal doesn't get more precious than when it's shaped into something beautiful. A friend of mine with a considerable amount of disposable income asked my opinion about whether he should buy an Aston Martin DB4, DB5 or DB6. Just to be obtuse, I reckoned that the DBS was the best value. But, of course, buying a car purely in terms of investment potential is the wrong place to start. My 8 November 1963 copy of Autocar is fascinating, because it tells me that a 1957 Porsche 356 was ￡600, an Aston DB2-4 ￡500, an Austin-Healey 3000 ￡550 and a Jag XK150 ￡490. It's all relative, but owning an old car, if you can afford it and have the space, is a life-enhancing experience. And it needn't cost 2013 DBS money.
