Essential oil composition and antimicrobial activity of leaves and stem of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni cultivated in the Western Himalaya, India

Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni, is one of the 154 members of the genus Stevia, produces number of high-potency and low calorie sweeteners in its leaf tissues. It has been used throughout the world as sweetener and medicine. The objectives of present study were to evaluate comparative chemical compositions and antimicrobial activity of essential oil of its leaves and stem. Constituents of both essential oils were characterized with the help of GC and GC-MS and were found to be a complex mixture of mono- and sesquiterpenoids. Major constituents in both of the essential oils were identified as β-elemene, β-caryophyllene, β-famesene, germacrene D, bicyclogermacrene, (E)-nerolidol, spathulenol, and viridiflorol with quantitative variations. Both the oils showed antibacterial activity against Micrococcus luteus. Staphylococcus aureus and antifungal activity against Aspergillus ochraceous, A. flavus and Trichophyton rubrum. Antifungal potential against A. sydowii and A. parasiticus was also observed for the leaves essential oil.
