Vetiver in south India is largely cultivated in coastal parts of Karnataka and the soils in this region are acidic and affect plant growth. A field study was conducted in an acidic (pH 5.2) sandy loam soil in Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka to test application of dolomite @ 2500 kg/ha on vetiver growth and yield. Dolomite application increased root and shoot length, number of tillers, total biomass and root yields and oil yield. It also increased soil pH (from 5.2 to 7.2), organic carbon (from 1.9 to 2.3), available N (from 521.3 to 558.6 kg/ha), available P (from 13.4 to 15.5 kg/ha), but decreased contents of K (from 156.80 to 140 kg/ha), Cu, Mn and Zn compared to the control plots. The results have shown that application of dolomite in the acidic soil has increased vetiver oil yield by nearly 50% and consequently increasing substantially returns from the vetiver cultivation in coastal Karnataka.
