Fentrazamide and flufenacet were evaluated for weed control in transplanted rice during kharif seasons of 2002 and 2003. Echinochloa crus-galli was the dominant weed. Season long weed competition caused 56.3% paddy yield reduction compared to weed free check. Fentrazamide at 105-120 g/ha, flufenacet 120 g/ha, butachlor 1500 g/ ha, pretilachlor 625 g/ha and anilofos 400 g/ha provided effective control of E. crus-galli and yields due to these treatments were significantly higher than unweeded control but at par with weed free control. Flufenacet was quite effective in controlling weeds at 120 g/ha, whereas higher dose of 150 g/ha was toxic to crop. The magnitude of toxicity varied depending on the type of rice grown/The toxicity was higher in fine rice (Taroari Basmati and Sugandha) compared to coarse rice (IR-64).
