Mulches and cover crops control weeds in many fruit crops by suppressing the weed growth and thereby increasing the soil moisture status through moisture conservation (Teotia and Srivastava, 1971; Mathews et al., 1987). Weed control through herbicides in old orchards of sapota has been reported by Leela (1982), but chemical weed control has not been found economical. However, such studies regarding use of mulches for weed control are lacking in sapota. Hence, this study was undertaken on the effect of different mulches on weed growth in sapota.
