Weed control and nitrogen levels on performance of wet seeded rice

Weeds pose greater constraints in realising higher yield in wet seeded rice than in transplanted rice because of simultaneous germination of both rice and weed seeds. The extent of yield reduction due to weeds has been 15-20 percent in transplanted rice, 30-35 percent in direct seeded rice and more than 50 percent in upland rice (Pillai and Rao, 1974). Use of higher nitrogen to realise higher yields in absence of suitable weed management harms the crop by favouring weed growth (Moody, 1981). Weed control is critical and difficult in wet seeded rice. As manual weeding and other methods are expensive and labour intensive, use of herbicide for control of weeds is an effective alternative. The present study was carried out to elicit the effect of various herbicides and nitrogen levels on performance of crop and weeds in wet seeded rice.
