A PRELIMINARY EVALUATION OF EFFICACY OF GRAVITY SURVEY IN EXPLORATION FOR LIGNITE IN THE PALANA LIGNITE FIELD, DISTRICT BIKANER, RAJASTHAN

Lignite-bearing sedimentary rock sequence of Lower Tertiary age occurs around Palana in the Bikaner district of Rajasthan (La Touche, 1902; Pareek, 1964 and Dutta, 1971). The lignite and associated rocks do not outcrop in the area and are buried under a thick pile of Quaternary deposits. For want of any surface indicator for lignite, geophysical gravity surveys were employed to delineate residual gravity 'lows' in the search for lignite. As the locations interpreted as gravity 'lows' are considered to be occupied by low-density material, these are indicative of probable lignite , occurrences (Telford et al, 1976). Test drilling for regional assessment of lignite was carried out with gravity surveys as one of the bases (Saxena and Sahiwala, 1992; Babulal et al., 1991). The idea of targeting gravity lows for delineation of lignite occurrences is based on the premise that lignite and associated clays, being low-density material, are prone to get reflected in the gravity lows. Since the presumption of locating lignite occurrences with the help of residual gravity concept is based on the fact that lignite is a low-density material, an attempt has been made to study the behaviour of gravity profile vis-a-vis the thickness of lignite seam and other sedimentological parameters such as cumulative thickness of sediments overlying Nagaur basement, thickness of Tertiary rocks, thickness of Quaternary rocks, thickness of Lathi formation, thickness of clay and thickness of arenaceous plus carbonate rocks up to a depth of 50 m (Table 1; Fig. 1,2). This preliminary study has been carried out with the help of four representative cross-sections in about 70 sq. km area to the north-east of Palana by examining lithological succession intersected in 11 boreholes (Fig. 1). During the course of investigation, a total of 67 boreholes were drilled in an area measuring 360' sq. km (approx). Lignite occurs mostly between 110m and 125 m depth and the maximum thickness of lignite seam recorded was 2.80 m.
