Effect of different tillage and weed management practices on rainfed lowland rice

Rice production in rainfed lowland condition is beset with problems such as competition from weeds. Zero tillage system is becoming popular in rice-wheat cropping system for wheat crop since it saves considerable fossil fuel energy and facilitates earlier sowing of wheat (Hobbs, 2002; Sharma ct al., 2002; Yaduraju and Mishra, 2002). But during kharif season, the usefulness of zero tillage practice for transplanted rice under rainfed shallow lowland condition has not been ascertained. Since puddlingconsumes energy (both bullock and fossil fuel), zero tillage practice has the potential for energy conservation and is worth investigation. It is estimated that labour and land preparation costs for rice production accounted for 30-40 percent of total production cost (Kandasamy et al., 2001). It is obvious that in zero tillage system, the weeds that emerge before transplanting are controlled by applying non-selective herbicides like glyphosate. It is possible that the weeds that emerge after transplanting can be tackled by applying preemergence herbicides in zero tillage system.
